History of the Church
A HISTORY OF dedication- commitment - and the desire to serve the community of Blythewood, S.C. with the enduring power of the Gospel.
Our Story
St, Mark's Lutheran Church was organized in 1885 with 26 charter members. The original location was on Blythewood Road about three miles west of the City of Blythewood. The original building was torn down and many of the materials were used to build the current building. The sanctuary doors are believed to be from the original church. The stained -glass windows were given in memory of many of our faithful members. The original cemetery is still in use as is the one behind the present building. As you sit on the wooden pews preparing your heart and mind for worship, and you feel the warmth of the sunshine streaming in the elegant stained-glass windows . You are sharing history with those whom came before you. Embrace the history in the sanctuary and share the love for God's Church.
Milestones Through the Years
1885
Our Founding
The first building was constructed by four dedicated men who each contributed one hundred dollars, and was placed on a site, donated by a Methodist layman, on what is now Blythewood Road. This building was dedicated in 1888, is now gone; but the old cemetery remains at this location today,
1927
St. Andrews/ St. Mark's Parish was Formed
The Rev. T.C. Parker was the first Pastor to serve the newly formed parish. After a few years passed, the decision was made to relocated St, Mark's to a spot on Highway 21 in Blythewood itself. Land was donated by Dr. Michael Langford and Mr. Luther Langford. The old church building on Blythewood Road was torn down, and this lumber was transported to the new site for use in erecting the new church building. Interim services of worship were held at the Blythewood School building, for three years until the new edifice could be completed...
1931
In March of 1931The First Cornerstone was Laid
Dr, Langford was who laid the first cornerstone for the building which still serves the congregation, and the service of dedication was held with representatives of the S.C. Lutheran Synod being in attendance. At that time Membership had grown to 39 confirmed and 53 Baptized members. The joint parish continued to serve the needs of the area until 1966.
1966
A New Beginning
The joint congregation of St. Andrews and St. Mark's now agreed to dissolve the parish, and for each to go their separate way. The jointly owned parsonage adjacent to Trinity Methodist was sold. From this point each congregation was a separate entity, affiliated with the Lutheran Synod of South Carolina.
1967
Continuing the Journey
Recognizing the enormous potential of the rapidly growing area surrounding Blythewood, St. Mark's in 1967 entered into a joint ministry venture with the Division of Missions in North America (DMNA) and committed itself to progressive growth, both in numbers and in spiritual service to the community and its changing needs.
